BugHerd and ChatGPT: Set up the MCP server

Use this guide to connect BugHerd to ChatGPT so you can access your BugHerd projects, tasks, and comments directly in ChatGPT.

Note: MCP apps/custom apps in ChatGPT may depend on your ChatGPT plan and workspace settings. Workspace admins may need to enable custom apps first.

Prerequisites

Before you begin:

  • You have a BugHerd account

  • You have access to at least one BugHerd organization

  • Your ChatGPT plan/workspace supports MCP apps

  • Custom apps are enabled for your workspace, if applicable

Add BugHerd MCP to ChatGPT

1. Enable Developer Mode

In ChatGPT:

  • Go to Settings → Apps → Advanced Settings

  • Turn on Developer Mode

2. Create a new app

  • Click Create App

3. Enter app details

Fill in the following:

4. Configure authentication

  • Open Advanced OAuth Settings

  • Enter:

    • OAuth Client ID: BugHerd MCP

5. Connect your BugHerd account

  • Click Create

You’ll be redirected to the BugHerd authorization page.

On this page:

  • Log in if prompted

  • Select the organization you want ChatGPT to access

  • Click Allow

6. Confirm connection

After authorizing:

  • You’ll be redirected back to ChatGPT

  • BugHerd will appear in your apps list as Connected

You’ll also see available actions (such as add_comment, list_projects, etc.).

Test Your Connection

Try:

“List my BugHerd projects”

If ChatGPT returns your projects, the connection is working.

What You Can Do

Once connected, you can:

  • View projects

  • View your assigned tasks

  • Explore project details

  • View tasks across projects

  • Add comments to tasks
